“What’s That Foggy Stuff?” Understanding Window Condensation vs. Broken Seals

Have you ever looked out your window and thought, “Why is it so cloudy out?”—only to realize it’s not the weather, it’s your window?

Sunlit backyard seen through a screened window with a broken seal, with tall trees, green lawn, deck railing, and metal planter beds.

If you've noticed a foggy or hazy look trapped between the panes of your double-pane windows, you're probably dealing with more than just a little moisture. You're likely looking at a broken window seal—and unfortunately, this is one of those problems that a good cleaning just won’t fix.

Let’s break it down.

Condensation vs. Broken Seals: What’s the Difference?

It’s totally normal to see a little condensation on the inside or outside of your windows especially on chilly mornings. That’s just the temperature difference at work. A quick wipe with a towel and it's gone.

But if the fog is stuck between the glass panes—and no amount of scrubbing inside or outside makes it go away you’ve got a broken seal.

Modern double-pane windows are built with a sealed air space between the panes, often filled with gas like argon to improve insulation. When that seal breaks (which can happen from age, weather changes, or even a rough installation), moisture sneaks in and gets trapped. The result? A permanent foggy look that can make even the cleanest home look dingy.

Why Cleaning Won’t Help.

At Gann’s Cleaning, we’re pros at making glass sparkle—but even we can’t clean between sealed panes. Once that seal is compromised, the moisture and haze are inside the glass sandwich, so to speak.

We’ve had plenty of folks call us out thinking their windows are just dirty, only to find out it’s a seal failure. And while we love a good window transformation, this is one of those situations where cleaning isn’t the cure.

What Should You Do If You Have Broken Seals?

Unfortunately, broken window seals usually mean it’s time to replace the window pane (or sometimes the whole window, depending on the design and age). Some companies offer defogging or re-sealing services, but they’re often temporary fixes and not recommended for long-term results.

We always recommend having a local window professional take a look and give you options. And if you’re not sure whether it’s a cleaning issue or a seal problem, give us a call—we’ll take a look before you call in the repair men.

Pro Tip: Regular Window Cleaning Can Help You Spot Seal Failures Early

The sooner you notice a seal failure, the better. Regular window cleaning not only keeps your home looking great, but it also gives you a chance to catch these problems before they get worse. During our cleanings, we always keep an eye out for early signs of broken seals and can let you know if we spot anything unusual.

Got foggy windows and not sure what’s going on?We’re happy to come take a look and if it’s something we can clean, we’ll make ‘em shine. If not, we’ll point you in the right direction. Either way, your windows will thank you.
